Wow! We need three more interns

We are now looking for three remote (unpaid) interns, people who like to read books by authors like:

Tana French
Eleanor Brown
Jacqueline Sheehan
Jodi Picoult
Gillian Flynn
Lori Roy
Laurie Notaro
Celia Rivenbark
Elin Hilderbrand
Kristin Hannah
Jeannette Walls
Kate Atkinson

This is an eclectic list, so obviously you don't need to like everyone on it! But basically, you should like at least one of the following genres: humor, memoir, upmarket women's fiction and literary suspense.

I should say, because I forgot to say it in regard to the other internship posting, that you do not need to have any kind of publishing experience or even publishing aspirations. We are just looking for people who love books and love to read.

Please send e-mail to intern@thebentagency.com. Please put "generalist intern" in the subject line. Tell us why you want the internship, attach a resume if you have one although it's not essential, and list the last ten books you read and your ten favorite books.

Please do not apply if you are primarily a young adult/middle grade reader. It's fine if you do some of that, but we already have our young adult/middle grade specialists in place.

If you have applied in the past you are more than welcome to apply again.

We ask for at least a 10 hour a week time commitment.

  1. Admittedly, I was very excited to see this post! In fact, all of the internships have made me appropriately giddy. Thank you for posting this.

  2. I'd love to intern, but since I will likely be reviewing some of these authors' books, I won't be able to apply. Good luck to those that will get the job.

  3. I have a question...if I have recently submitted a MS to you, can I still apply, or is it a conflict of interest of some sort?

  4. That wouldn't be considered a conflict, I don't think...

  5. Jenny, if this is an unpaid internship and it's remote, what would be the benefit for the intern? I mean, would this prepare him/her to become an editor or an agent? And what kinds of things would the person be reading? (query letters, advanced copies?) Thanks.

  6. The value is really up to you. Some of our interns are folks who don't live in NYC but still want to get publishing experience. Two of my former interns are now agents. But if the benefit for you isn't clear, then this may not be the right opportunity.

Interns perform a variety of duties here. I go into more detail than that when I speak with qualified candidates about the position.

  7. So tickled to see you mention Kate Atkinson. One of my all time favourites. Behind The Scenes At The Museum is magic.

  8. When you say "remote", do you mean they can be from another hemisphere? Just curious...!

  9. If you ever need a picture book or a mg novel reader, I'll throw my hat in the ring. :)

What a great opportunity to learn more about the industry!

  10. I *really* wish I had 10 hours to dedicate to something like this - because I'd be in contact in a nano-second. What a wonderful opportunity!
